About the Role

The City of New Westminster is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Building Official 3 to join our dynamic inspections team. As a key technical expert within the Building Department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, sustainability, and structural integrity of our community's diverse built environment. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your advanced knowledge of the British Columbia Building Code to complex residential, commercial, and industrial projects while providing exceptional service to residents, developers, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough site inspections for complex multi-family residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings to ensure strict adherence to the BC Building Code, Plumbing Code, and municipal bylaws.
  • Review and interpret intricate architectural and structural plans, specifications, and technical reports to verify compliance during various stages of construction.
  • Provide expert technical advice and guidance to developers, architects, engineers, and homeowners regarding building regulations and permit requirements.
  • Issue formal inspection reports, correction notices, and stop-work orders when necessary, ensuring all deficiencies are addressed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, including Planning and Engineering, to streamline the development process and ensure a cohesive approach to urban growth.
  • Maintain comprehensive electronic records and documentation related to inspections, permits, and correspondence using the city’s land management software.
  • Investigate complaints and enforce building-related bylaws, representing the City with professionalism and integrity in all public interactions.

Qualifications
  • A Diploma in Building Technology or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Level 3 Certification from the Building Officials' Association of British Columbia (BOABC) is mandatory.
  • Extensive experience performing building inspections at a senior level within a municipal or provincial regulatory environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of the British Columbia Building Code, Plumbing Code, and relevant safety standards.
  • Superior communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical requirements clearly and concisely to diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills to handle sensitive enforcement situations effectively.
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and a clean driving record are required for site visits.
  • Proficiency in using modern office software and specialized building permit tracking systems.
